Deposit protection

EU guarantee schemes generally cover eligible deposits up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. This protection does not cover crypto assets or DeFi returns.

Staking and DeFi

Native staking rewards participation in proof-of-stake consensus. Token prices, validator fees and exit conditions affect the euro result. Liquid staking adds smart contract and derivative pricing risks.

Stablecoin yield commonly comes from lending, vaults or liquidity provision. Screen opportunities in DefiLlama, then verify the network, collateral, fees, incentives and withdrawals in the protocol documentation. Stablecoins can lose their peg.

What the deposit rate tells you

The ECB rate describes newly agreed household deposits across the euro area in a particular month. For your own comparison, use a quote from the bank and check whether the rate is fixed, when interest is credited and what happens if you withdraw early. At a hypothetical fixed annual rate of 2.33%, a €10,000 deposit held for one full year would earn €233 before tax with simple interest. For a shorter term, the annualised rate is not the return over that term. Check the legal identity of the bank that takes the deposit and whether you already hold balances under the same banking licence. That affects how much of your total balance falls within the guarantee limit.

Where staking rewards come from

In a proof-of-stake network, validators help confirm activity and receive rewards under the rules of the protocol. Operating a validator, delegating and joining a pooled service come with different requirements, fees and responsibilities. Some protocols can penalise validators for breaking network rules. With liquid staking, a holder may have a choice between redeeming through the protocol and selling the derivative token on the market. For redemption, check queues and processing times. For a sale, look at trading depth, fees and the gap between the sale price and the value of the underlying position. These costs can matter most when many participants try to exit at once.

How to read an advertised DeFi APY

APY expresses an annualised return with an assumption about compounding. APR usually excludes that compounding effect. Providers may use different accrual periods and may show rewards before some fees. Identify the part of the yield paid by borrowers and the part paid as temporary incentives in another token. Check who chooses collateral and who can change the vault parameters. If an incentive ends or its token falls in value, the return changes. DefiLlama can help you find markets by asset and network, but verify the product and withdrawal terms in the protocol documentation. A large amount of deposited capital shows the scale of use, while available withdrawal liquidity depends on the market and product design.

Compare the result in euros

Record the opening amount in euros, the holding period and the currency of each expected cash flow. For a crypto position, include conversion spreads, network charges and provider fees. Test more than one exchange-rate scenario. If the token price stays unchanged, a 4% token reward produces a 4% euro return before expenses. If the token drops 10% against the euro, a hypothetical €10,000 position ends at €9,360. A dollar stablecoin can also lose value in euro terms while retaining its dollar peg. For money needed by a particular date, compare the bank maturity date with protocol exit queues and the market liquidity available if you have to sell early.

Comparing in euros

A hypothetical 4% token reward combined with a 10% fall in token price against the euro produces a 6.4% loss before expenses. Compare net outcomes in euros over the same period and check when funds can be withdrawn.
